U.S. Forest Service
The Challenge
The U.S. Forest Service required a way to move their legacy applications to a new "virtual" data center with attention to cost while continuing to meet Federal mandates. Any solution must include automation of platform provisioning, application deployment, stringent auditing requirements, on-going analysis of infrastructure and elimination of manual configurations. Finally, source code and packages needed to be controlled at a central point.
Solution
The solution uses Puppet to orchestrate configuration management. Puppet console replaced error-prone, manual command line provision and deploy processes. Utilization of hardware has increased now that applications are scaled on-demand. Production applications can now be rolled-back in an emergency. Manual auditing processes have been replaced using "Infrastructure as Code." Finally, Autostructure resources are currently automating network configuration. We are integrating Puppet with network proxys, load balancers and service discovery tools.
